CEICOM Project
Dear Madam,
Dear Sir,
Whether on purpose or by chance, you have reached the homepage of Central European ICOM (CEICOM), presenting a survey of the laws pertaining to museums and protection of cultural heritage in the CEICOM countries: Austria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Germany, Hungary, Poland, Slovakia and Slovenia.
The project has been supported by a grant from ICOM Paris.
Mutual exchange of information on the situation in cultural heritage legislation has always been estimated, within CEICOM, to be one of the focal points of interest. The legislative tools for protection of cultural heritage are under different stages of preparation in the CEICOM countries, but the need of their definitive adoption is urgently felt in all of them. Co-ordination of the museums negotiations and professional debates during preparation of national legislative standards would help to ensure compatibility of the conditions of museum work in the future.
That is why the decision to publish a survey of the laws pertaining to museums and protection of cultural heritage in the various CEICOM countries was accepted as an extremely useful one for both the present ICOM representatives and their governments.
This page is not complete yet, as some of the member countries are in a period of legislative changes and have preferred to wait for the results of the legislative process. That was also one of the major reasons for our decision to make this internet application, which is flexible enough to provide up-to-date information for museum professionals. All the laws published on this page are of informative character, i.e. the translations have been made merely for the purpose of the present project. They are not official translations nevertheless, even so they represent an interesting source of information for comparison of various approaches to the protection of cultural heritage in different countries.
The page will be further updated, following legislative changes in the respective countries, and the authors will be pleased to hear your opinions on its contents.
On behalf of the CEICOM working team
Katka Tlachová, Pavel Jirásek
Czech Committee of ICOM
